About the inn

The Patton House, since the 1860s

The inn was originally the Patton House, built by Charles Patton, a native of Transylvania County, in the 1860s. The back section went up before the Civil War; the larger front section followed after it. Wood, sand and layered rock were hauled down from the mountainside behind the house.

Today the five bedrooms each have their own bath, updated with cultured marble and tile. The front porch has a terrific view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, coffee in the morning and a dazzling sunset in the evening.

The estate keeps you busy without leaving the grounds: the Key Falls Trail begins at the inn, there is a tennis court, a horseshoe pit, and a pond where you can fish for bass or bream. The Pavilion restaurant sits next to the creek.

The estate is also a wedding and events venue. If you are planning one, contact the inn and the events team will walk you through it.

Brevard and the Land of Waterfalls

Transylvania County is called the Land of Waterfalls, and Key Falls sits between two great forests. Here is how our guests make the most of it, with honest notes from the inn.

Waterfalls, closest first

  • Key Falls, at the inn. The Key Falls Trail begins at the inn and climbs to our own waterfall. Free, no driving, best after breakfast.
  • Pisgah National Forest, 4.5 miles. Looking Glass Falls is right by the road on US-276, and Sliding Rock is the natural waterslide our guests come back talking about. A full day of trails starts here.
  • DuPont State Recreational Forest, 10.3 miles. Hooker Falls, Triple Falls and High Falls on one well marked loop. Go early on weekends; the car parks fill by mid morning.
  • The French Broad River, beside the estate. Our creek runs into it, and the Davidson River nearby is a mecca for fly fishermen who travel a long way to fish it.

Downtown Brevard, 10 minutes

  • Shops and galleries. A vibrant small town center for shopping, dining and art galleries, an easy evening after a forest day.
  • Brevard Music Center. The world renowned summer music festival and school. If your stay overlaps a concert night, book tickets ahead.
  • The white squirrels. Brevard is famous for them. Keep an eye on the lawns around Brevard College and you will likely spot one.
  • Cradle of Forestry. The birthplace of American forestry, in Pisgah Forest, pairs well with a Looking Glass Falls stop.

Worth the drive

  • Biltmore Estate, Asheville. The big day trip. America's largest home and gardens; allow most of a day and buy tickets in advance.
  • Carl Sandburg Home, Flat Rock. The poet's farm at Connemara, with goats and gentle trails, on the way to the Flat Rock Playhouse.
  • Blue Ridge Parkway. Reached through the Pisgah Forest entrance roads; the overlooks above the inn are at their best near sunset.

Ask us at breakfast and we will match the day to the weather. And a favor: if you spot anything in this guide that has changed, tell us and we will fix it right away.

Good to know before you go

  • Waterfall rocks are slippery. Stay on marked trails and behind rails. Every year people are hurt climbing wet rock at falls in this county.
  • Start early on weekends. DuPont and Sliding Rock car parks can fill by 10 a.m. in summer and fall color season.
  • Phone signal fades in the forest. Download your trail maps at the inn before you set out, and tell us your rough plan at breakfast.
  • Dinner planning. The Pavilion serves Thursday to Sunday only, and it is popular with locals. Book your table when you book your room.
